The Government of India continues to lower the threshold for mandatory e-invoicing under GST, moving towards a completely digitized indirect tax ecosystem. For exporters and B2B suppliers, understanding these mandates is crucial for avoiding penalties and ensuring smooth ITC claims for buyers.
1. Current Thresholds & Roadmap
Currently, any business with an aggregate turnover exceeding ₹5 Crores in any previous financial year (from 2017-18 onwards) is mandated to generate e-invoices for B2B supplies and exports. This digital trail ensures that the Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and QR code are present on every legal document.
2. Benefits for Exporters
Beyond compliance, e-invoicing simplifies the filing of GSTR-1 and the auto-population of export data into the ICEGATE portal. This significantly speeds up IGST refunds and duty drawback processing, improving the overall liquidity for small-scale exporters.
